Week 1: In the Beginning (1800 - 1870): Day 1: Arriving In New Zealand…

Activity 1: The First Settlers
  1. Maui caught the north island
  2. Maui’s canoe was the south island
3.Maui hid in the canoe so he could go fishing with his brothers

I have heard the story Maui and the sun
I have also heard the story of Matariki

Activity 2: Setting Sail
On my voyage, it was very pretty but very nerve-racking the sites of
New Zealand were beautiful.

Bonus Activity: Waka Ama

I would not like to be in a waka ama race because I don’t like going on boats.

  1. Kia Ora Lucy,

My name is Rachel and I am working with Ellee on the Summer Learning Journey programme this year. We are so excited to see that you have joined us and posted two days' worth of activities already. Wow! Great work!

Like you, I would be a bit nervous to join in a waka ama race as I often get a bit seasick when on boats. I did, however, learn how to paddle a canoe when I was a little girl growing up in Canada. Canoes are much like wakas although they are usually quite a bit smaller. Have you ever been in a canoe? One day I am hoping to take my son, Aronui, back to Canada for a visit. I suspect that my dad will take him out in a canoe for a special paddle in our local river. It's called the Mississippi!

Keep up the great work with your blogging, Lucy. We can't wait to work with you over the next two weeks, learning, creating and sharing this learning together on your blog.

    All the best,

    Rachel :)
